This massive building and its reason for existence hit me like a brick in the face. I thought of its history. I’d read that The United States Penitentiary at Leavenworth was built at the turn of the century and was the largest maximum security federal prison in the U.S. from 1903-2005. This place had housed some of the most notorious criminals of its time: “Machine Gun” Kelly, Al Capone, Bugs Moran, James Earl Ray, “Baby Face” Nelson, Frank Nitti, and John Gotti.
