From the serene, the coddled state of being, I awoke when Joani shifted her body slightly. She was breathing very deeply, and I was happy for her to be able to sleep.

Then I became startled, aghast and terrified. The reverie of meeting Joani that first time 27 years earlier quickly slipped away and was replaced by a disturbed and shaky feeling that overwhelmed me.
